Where to start

The first two decisions lock in all the others:

  • The table first. The shape decides how many people fit and how they face each other: round has no head, rectangular seats more.
  • Clearance around it. There has to be room for a chair to pull out and for someone to pass behind — the sum that decides whether the table really fits.
  • Then the chairs. Seat height has to work with table height, and the back decides whether the table is for quick meals or long conversation.
  • The chandelier. It sits over the table and has to light without entering the line of sight of the person opposite.
  • The sideboard. It stores what the table cannot and becomes a serving surface when the house fills.
  • Mixing chairs. Different heads of table are a legitimate device, as long as the seat height matches.
