What sets one dresser apart from another

Start with the finish on the front, which is what you see all day:

• Solid wood. Continuous grain across the drawers and a frame that carries weight. This is the base of the category.
• Marquetry and bone inlay. Pattern applied piece by piece on the drawer fronts — the dresser becomes the focal point of the room and makes art above it unnecessary.
• Leather and fabric. An upholstered front, for a bedroom that calls for a soft touch rather than exposed wood.
• Metal hardware. A small detail that changes the whole reading: recessed pulls keep the piece clean, exposed handles mark the classical.
• Number of drawers. Fewer, deeper drawers hold folded clothing; more, shallower ones organise small items.
• Height. A tall dresser works as a standing surface; a low one becomes a composition surface and fits under a mirror.
