18/10 stainless steel: the alloy that separates lasting from ruined

Riva works almost entirely in 18/10 stainless steel — eighteen per cent chromium, ten per cent nickel. That alloy is what keeps a piece from staining with lemon, darkening with time or losing its mirror finish after years on the table. Over it come the finishes: silver plating, gold plating, black nickel and polished.

What sets one piece apart from another

The base is the same; the finish and the design decide the table it belongs on:

Polished. Steel on show, contemporary and unfussy. It takes the most use and asks for the least care.
Silver plating. A cooler reflection and a classical reading — the piece for a formal table, flattering white china.
Gold plating. It warms the table and performs at night, with candlelight nearby and a dark cloth.
Black nickel. A dark matte finish, for a contemporary table where traditional brilliance would weigh.
Trama and Origami. Two open-work lines that lighten the volume of a piece and let the cloth show through.
