What sets one piece apart from another

Height decides the conversation; the design decides the weight on the table:

• Open-work centrepiece. A pattern that lightens the volume and lets the cloth show — round for a square table, oval for a long one.
• Cheese board. Stone, glass and metal in one piece: it serves and decorates, from counter to table without a change.
• Single-stem vase. A narrow mouth that holds one stem upright — the simplest arrangement and the one that interrupts least.
• Picture frame. In plated steel, with a finished back, to stand on a console.
• Height. The table rule: the piece has to sit below the eye line of anyone seated.
• Finish. Silver for white china, gold for an evening with candles, polished for everyday.
