What sets one piece apart from another

The material decides the temperature and the use:

• Enamelled stoneware. It holds heat, does not absorb odour and brings the colour of the cookware to the coffee table.
• Stainless steel. It keeps temperature longer than fine porcelain and does not crack with thermal shock.
• Coffee pot or teapot. The coffee one has a taller body and a fine spout; the tea one is wider, so the leaf can open.
• Cup or mug. A cup with a saucer is service; a mug is routine — and both belong in the same house at different moments.
• Kettle. It goes on the heat and takes the ready water to the table, saving an intermediate jug.
• Butter dish and honey pot. The pieces that turn breakfast into a set table rather than improvised packaging.
