What sets one piece apart from another

The type of plating and the use decide the upkeep:

• Silver plating. The classical finish, reflecting candlelight and flattering white china.
• Plated metal. A different base, but the same reading on the table, at a different weight and price.
• Stainless steel. For the piece used often, when the upkeep of silver does not pay off.
• Darkening. It is part of it: silver reacts with air and comes back with polishing. Stored in a proper bag it darkens far more slowly.
• Serving pieces. Trays, centrepieces and napkin rings are the heart of the category and what shows most on a set table.
• In sets. One finish across the whole table is what gives the reading of a complete service.
