What sets one water goblet apart from another

It is chosen in relation to the rest of the table, not on its own:

  • Crystal. Weight in the base and brilliance that matches the wine glass from the same line — the choice when the table is fully set.
  • Glass. It takes daily use and the dishwasher, and it is where the colour lives.
  • Coloured. Because the water glass is full most of the evening, colour shows more here than in any other piece.
  • Relief. Facets and fluting scatter the light and hide the fingerprints that are unavoidable on a water glass.
  • Stemmed or not. Stemmed follows the wine glass; stemless is more stable and works well at lunch and outdoors.
  • Capacity. It has to be larger than the wine glass — that is what keeps you from refilling every two minutes.
