What sets one tumbler apart from another

Material first, because it decides where the glass can go:

Crystal. Thin walls, brilliance and weight in the base. This is the glass for a set dinner, not the everyday one in a house with children.
Glass. It takes daily life, the dishwasher and replacement. This is where most of the colour lives.
Acrylic. Outdoors, by the pool and at any table with children, where glass is not a good idea.
Relief and fluting. The pattern catches the light and hides fingerprints, which is the flaw of a plain tumbler on a set table.
Coloured. It changes the whole table without changing the china, and you can run one colour per place without it looking mismatched.
Tall or short. Tall is for drinks over ice and water at the table; short is for a small pour and juice.
