What sets one plant apart from another

Leaf and height decide almost everything:

• Large leaf. It fills volume quickly and settles a corner on its own — strelitzia is the classic example.
• Fine foliage. A more delicate reading, for a table, a console or a composition with other pieces.
• Floor height. The plant that stands on the floor beside an armchair or a console, filling the vertical emptiness of a room.
• Table height. A smaller piece, to compose with a vase, a book and an object.
• With or without a pot. Some arrive ready to place; others ask for a cachepot that suits the room.
• Where it works best. A dark corner, a windowless bathroom, an office and the house of someone who travels.
