What sets one jar apart from another

The lid and the painting decide almost everything:

  • With a lid. It closes the volume and gives the classical ginger-jar silhouette — that is what separates a jar from a vase.
  • Painted porcelain. Floral, blue and white or a painted scene: the pattern is what lets the piece work alone on a console.
  • Bronze details. Handles, rims and feet in gilt metal over porcelain, the most formal reading in the category.
  • Glass. It shows the interior and asks for contents — good for storing what is also good looking.
  • In pairs. Two identical jars at the ends of a long console is the most stable arrangement and the hardest to get wrong.
  • Size. A small jar is a supporting piece; a large one settles the furniture alone and needs no company.
