The material decides the cleaning; the shape decides the table:

• Natural fibre. Texture and a warm tone, and the contrast that flatters a wooden table and white china.
• Nylon and polypropylene. They wipe clean with a damp cloth and do not hold stains — the choice for an everyday table and a house with children.
• Linen and fabric. A soft drape and a formal reading, but they ask for real washing.
• Round. It works better on a round table and softens the rigid alignment of the places.
• Rectangular. It follows the edge of a long table and organises the service in a line.
• Quantity. Worth one more than the number of chairs — a placemat is a piece that stains and goes out of circulation.
