What sets one sconce apart from another

The direction of the light decides the use:

  • Uplight. It spreads across the ceiling and lights the room indirectly, without glare.
  • Downlight. It marks a point — good for reading at a headboard and for highlighting a picture.
  • Both directions. It draws two bands on the wall and becomes a graphic element in the room.
  • With a glass shade. It diffuses the light and softens the shadow on the wall.
  • Installation height. Near a headboard, at shoulder height seated; in a hallway, above the eye line.
  • Power point. It needs wiring in the wall — the thing to check before ordering.
