What sets one piece apart from another

Each one solves a moment of the service:

Fruit bowl. It stays on the table between meals and is the piece most on show — worth choosing for how it looks empty.
Toast rack. It keeps toast upright and dry, instead of stacked and limp.
Platter and gravy boat. They take the pans off the table and organise service à la française.
18/10 stainless steel. It does not stain with acidic food or darken — which is what lets you serve lemon and tomato without worry.
With plating. Silver for a classical table, gold for the evening; both ask for hand washing.
Stone. It serves cold for longer and doubles as a board, with no intermediate plate.
