What sets one piece apart from another

The foot and the diameter decide what it serves:

Footed cake stand. It takes the spotlight and frees the space beneath — the piece for a whole cake.
Tiered server. Several levels that multiply the surface without taking more table; it solves small pastries in quantity.
Mini cake stand. A small piece for an individual portion, good in a group of different heights.
Glass. It lets the base of the cake show and does not compete with the icing.
Plated stainless steel. Silver and gold for a formal table, with resistance for frequent use.
With a lid or dome. It protects the cake and keeps the presentation between one slice and the next.
