What sets one book apart from another

Some are objects, others are objects and hiding places:

• Leather book box. It opens and holds the remote, the keys and a charger — it solves coffee table clutter without looking like a box.
• Wood book box. Weight and texture, for anyone who wants the object above the function.
• Hardbound. A hard cover and a coloured spine, to build a stack and fill a shelf.
• In a stack. Two or three lying flat become a base for a sculpture or a vase — the most common use and the easiest to get right.
• Standing. Lined up with a bookend, they show the spine and organise the shelf.
• Colour. The spine is what you see; choosing by the palette of the shelf pays off more than choosing by title.
