What sets one piece apart from another

Start with the job the piece does on the furniture, which decides the size:

• Bronze and metal mounts. Handles, feet and rims in gilt metal over porcelain — the detail that separates a decorative piece from ordinary china.
• Cachepot. It takes the plastic pot the plant came in and settles the finish without repotting anything.
• Lidded box. It closes, it stores, and it still looks right closed, which is what you want from a box on a table.
• Blue and white. The pairing that crosses any style of room and speaks to wood, straw and lacquer.
• Figures and sculpture. For anyone who wants a point of interest on the furniture rather than one more volume.
