What sets one frame apart from another

The frame has to speak to the photograph and to the furniture, in that order:

• Metal. A thin border that frames without competing with the image. Gilt warms a black-and-white photograph; silver keeps the colour cooler and cleaner.
• Acrylic. It disappears around the photograph and works when the image is strong or the furniture already carries a lot.
• Wood. Warm to the touch and more informal — the bedroom and bookshelf frame, not the formal living room one.
• Velvet and stone. For when the frame is the piece: a texture you notice before the photograph, for a single portrait on a console.
• Portrait or landscape. Decide before the photograph: portraits ask for vertical, groups and landscapes for horizontal.
• In groups. Three or four frames of different heights in the same family of finish — that is how a shelf gains a story without becoming clutter.
