What sets one cushion apart from another

The fabric decides the texture and the filling decides whether it still looks right after being sat on:

Velvet. It deepens colour and shifts tone as the light hits it. This is the fabric that makes a neutral sofa look more expensive.
Linen. A dry texture and a looser drape, for a bright room and a light reading.
Embroidered cotton. Pattern applied to the piece itself, for when the cushion is the point of interest rather than the background.
Leather. A firm counterpoint among soft fabrics, and the piece that creases least.
Filling. This is what separates a cushion that holds its shape from one that becomes a pancake in the third month.
Size. Mix them: a larger size at the back and a smaller one in front creates layers; all the same size leaves the sofa flat.
