What sets one piece apart from another

The lid and the spout decide the function:

• Lidded butter dish. It keeps butter at spreading temperature and protected from the smell of the fridge.
• Gravy boat with a spout. It pours sauce in a thread, without running down the side and staining the cloth.
• Sugar bowl. A sealed lid is what stops sugar caking in a humid climate.
• Enamelled stoneware. It insulates better, does not absorb odour and reaches the table with the colour of the china.
• Capacity. A large piece with little inside dries the contents faster.
• In sets. The same colour across the three pieces gives the reading of a complete service.
