What sets one chandelier apart from another

The material decides the kind of light that reaches the room:

• Cut crystal. It breaks the light into many points and scatters reflections across the walls. This is the chandelier that makes a dining room look like another room at night.
• Glass. Cleaner light and a contemporary design, with shades that may be clear, frosted or coloured.
• Metal and brass. Exposed structure and directed light — the piece becomes a drawing on the ceiling rather than a diffuse source.
• Number of arms. More arms spread the light and take up width; fewer concentrate it and ask for another source in the room.
• Height. Over a dining table, the chandelier has to light without entering the line of sight of the person opposite.
• Bulb colour. The same piece changes completely between warm and neutral light — worth deciding alongside the chandelier.

A chandelier depends on three measurements to confirm first: ceiling height, the width of the table or room, and the clear height to the piece.
