What sets one pot apart from another

The body decides the drink; the material decides the temperature:

  • Teapot. A wider body, which gives the leaf room to open in the water.
  • Coffee pot. A taller body and a fine spout, to pour without splashing pale china.
  • Enamelled stoneware. It holds the warmth of the infusion longer than fine porcelain.
  • Stainless steel. It keeps temperature and does not crack with thermal shock.
  • Silver-plated metal. A formal service piece, for an afternoon coffee tray.
  • Capacity. Too small means standing up mid-service; too large and it cools before it is finished.
