What sets one bowl apart from another

The material decides where it can go; the depth decides what fits:

• Enamelled stoneware. It goes from the oven to the table and takes the microwave — the Le Creuset line and the base of the category.
• Acrylic. Outdoors, by the pool and at a table with children, with no risk of breaking.
• Alpaca metal and silver plate. A serving bowl, for a set table and the centre of the table, not for the oven.
• Crystal. A cold-serving piece: salad, ice, dessert — with the brilliance that matches the glass on the same table.
• Deep. For soup, broth and pasta with sauce, where the high side prevents the accident.
• Shallow and wide. For salad, a breakfast bowl and a single-plate meal, where you want to see what is inside.
