What sets one ring apart from another

It is a small piece, so material and subject do all the work:

• Stainless steel and metal. A plain, discreet ring that works on any table and does not compete with the china.
• Silver and gold. They pull candlelight and give the table formality — for an evening dinner.
• With a subject. A flower, a leaf, an animal: the ring becomes the colour accent of a neutral table.
• Stone and ceramic. Texture and weight, for a table with a linen cloth and handmade china.
• In sets. Six or eight identical is the standard; alternating two subjects by place also works.
• The opening. It has to take a fabric napkin, which is far thicker than paper.
