What sets one tray apart from another

The material decides whether it serves, composes, or both:

• Stainless steel and silver plate. The serving tray proper: it takes use, washes easily and reflects the light of the table. This is where the Riva and St. James pieces are.
• Wood. Warm to the touch and heavier. Good for breakfast in bed and for standing on a kitchen island.
• Finished metal. Gilt, antiqued, hammered — for when the tray is the object rather than the support.
• Ceramic. Colour and pattern in the piece itself, to compose a coffee table rather than to serve.
• Acrylic. Light and clear, for outdoors and for organising without adding visual weight.
• With or without handles. Handles are for carrying; without them, the tray is meant to stay put. Worth deciding that before the size.

The most common mistake is size: too small and it gathers nothing, too large and it takes the whole table. Measure the surface it will live on before choosing.
